Advice From Our Experts: Ice Cream Stains

There’s nothing has sweet as ice cream in the summer months. But cold treats mixed with warm weather can lead to messes. If the garment is dry clean only, make sure to take it to the cleaner as soon as you can and point out the stain. But if the garment can be washed, there’s a pretty simple way to treat protein stains at home following the steps below:

If the stain can be treated immediately: Run the garment under cold water and rub the affected area with detergent, then let it soak in cold water for 30 minutes. After soaking, launder the item in warm (not hot) water and then inspect. Be sure not to dry the item, heat from the drier can set the stain if it’s still there. If the stain hasn’t been removed, repeat the process; agitate the stain with detergent, soak for 30 minutes in cold water then rewash. If the stain still remains, try using a mild bleaching agent to remove the last traces of discoloration.

If the stain cannot be treated right away: First try scraping any crusted ice cream from the garment. Then follow the same process above; treat the garment with laundry stain remover and let it soak in cold water for 30 minutes and wash with warm water. Repeat if necessary before drying.
